The painting is based on the form of the caltrop fruit. The caltrop fruit is hard and covered with sharp spines, which often point upward when it falls to the ground, easily piercing the feet of animals or puncturing tires. Originally native to subtropical arid regions, the caltrop is now widely distributed across the world’s warmer areas. Owing to its resilience and strong seed dispersal ability, it has become an invasive weed in some regions and is classified as a harmful species.

The painting is an enlarged depiction inspired by the iron caltrop. The iron caltrop is a metal object modeled after the shape of the caltrop fruit. It typically consists of four sharp spikes arranged so that no matter how it is thrown or lands, one spike always points upward. In ancient times, it was used as a military obstacle. When thousands of iron caltrops were scattered across narrow roads, they effectively impeded the movement of enemy infantry and cavalry.
