Solo Exhibition, Moscow Manege Museum and Exhibition Association, Moscow, RussiaDate: Jan-24, 2014 - Mar-12, 2014Moscow Manege Museum and Exhibition Association is delighted to present solo exhibition of YANG Zhenzhong, one of the most important video artists from China, between 24 January and 12 March 2014 in Central Exhibition Hall. It is the first solo exhibition of Chinese artist in this major space in Moscow.Especially for this solo exhibition the artist has created Russian version of video project “I Will Die”, and presenting it along with other ten languages from the same series previously shown in the 52nd Venice Biennale. Within a week YANG was walking down in Moscow and met people in streets, offices, shops, classrooms and other public spaces. The protagonists of the video are ordinary people saying “I will die” in front of the camera with a variety of emotions and facial expressions. With help of the simplest method, YANG has managed to unveil the sense of vulnerability usually hidden behind the oblivion of death and overlook of existential questions. The solo exhibition in Moscow is intended to be a continuation of the dialogue that the artist has been establishing since 2005 with the entire world. The practice of this creative artist was formed back around 1990 and 2000 and is directly related to his individual experience of existence in the modern urban environment. Through the transformation of perception of reality, the artist actualizes the notion of normative social behavior. One of the main themes of his work is the increasing uncertainty and instability that capture each individual. Subjects of his works are often sharp contrasts and disharmony in society, social taboos, such as awareness of their own mortality. YANG uses the lingua franca of contemporary global art while remains within his own unique traditions. Through video art the artist can talk about the main point: life and death, human and society, cultural tradition and innovation, political as well as everyday.Built in 1817, Moscow Manege is located adjacent to the famous Red Square and Moscow Kremlin and now serves as a modern exhibition hall where different show are held throughout the year. In late 2013, the 5th Moscow Biennale of Contemporary Art was also held in the exact same location.
